  1. [1]COLLIN COLSHER: 1986 brings us The Crisis on Infinite Earths, a multiverse-shattering cosmic event that serves to end the Silver/Bronze Age timeline. But shortly after Crisis #1 and before the epic eleven issue finale, another cosmic event called Convergence happens in the blink of an eye. While the inclusion of Crisis on this quick list is obvious and necessary, Convergence is worth mentioning as well because it features Earth-1 Batman. Although, thanks to how things play out (thanks to the publication of 2017’s “Superman Reborn” arc), we should regard it as something that happens outside of normal space-time that is then basically erased from having ever happened at all. The following is a timeline with synopses for Convergence.

–REFERENCE: In Convergence #0-1. The über Brainiac “collects” Gotham City, literally digging it up and putting an impenetrable energy dome around it mere moments after The Crisis on Infinite Earths begins. Gotham is placed, along with other stolen cities from alternate chronologies, onto the sentient planet Telos, who exists outside of time and space. Besides Batman and his Bat-Family, several other non-Gothamites, including members of the the JLA, Flash (Barry Allen, who had been visiting Gotham from his 30th century home), Superman, Supergirl, and Swamp Thing, are present in Gotham at the time of its “collection.” (Brainiac, or possibly someone else, was able to cause a large number of heroes to gather at one spot before the dome fell, thus ensuring a “good catch.” Different lures are used for different cities.) Brainiac and Telos use special tech to depower any metahumans under the domes they collect. No one under the dome will have any idea how or why they have come to be prisoners. Nor will they even realize their city has been removed from a dead timeline and taken to an interdimensional planet.

–REFERENCE: In Convergence #0-1 and Convergence: Batman and the Outsiders #1. Twelve hours after Gotham is stolen away by Brainiac, Batman is able to determine that there is no way out. Beyond that, Batman cannot ascertain who has domed-off Gotham, nor where the city has been taken. Batman (along with everyone else) will live trapped under the dome for the next year. Telos will provide energy and limited resources to the “collected” Gotham. Despite the new status quo, Batman begins a routine patrol of the streets of Gotham with the support of his Outsiders and the GCPD. Without her powers, Halo slips into a coma. Batman’s protection of the domed city will continue for the next calendar year.

–REFERENCE: In Convergence: Adventures of Superman #1. Batman teaches Supergirl a special dive-bomb double-punch technique.

–Convergence: Batman and the Outsiders #1 Part 1
It’s been exactly 364 days since Gotham was domed-up and removed from its timeline. Commissioner Gordon meets with Batman to discuss the restlessness of the citizens. A frustrated Batman then chats with Alfred, who speaks about how everyone in Gotham is miserable except for Metamorpho, who is happily cured of his powers.

    –Convergence: The Flash #1
It’s been exactly one year (365 days) since Gotham was domed-up and removed from its timeline. Barry Allen, now a GCPD cop, meets with Bruce for lunch. Barry seems defeated by all that has happened, but Bruce remains stalwart in his hope that they will escape.

–Convergence: Batman and the Outsiders #1 Part 2
Shortly after having lunch with Barry Allen, Bruce suits-up in his Batman costume, but takes a power nap in preparation for the afternoon’s patrol. Batman’s snooze is interrupted by a towering voice that thunders through the entire dome. Telos has taken initiative and decided to start a fighting tournament that includes all of the captured domed cities. (Brainiac was defeated, as seen in The New 52: Futures End, while attempting to collect another city, thus giving the abandoned Telos free reign to carry on his master’s mission as he sees fit.) All of the domes on Telos are lifted, all powers are re-granted, and Telos himself declares that only being the last warrior standing will spare destruction for one’s respective city. (Telos’s declaration is also shown in Convergence #1.) No sooner has Gotham’s dome been deactivated than OMAC (mind-controlled by Godmother) and a horde of disfigured mutants from the alternate “Earth-AD” future timeline storm into the city looking to kill everyone in sight.

–Convergence: Batman and the Outsiders #2
Batman assembles his Outsiders to defeat the Godmother-controlled OMAC and a bunch of disfigured mutants from the alternate “Earth-AD.” Afterward, Modern Age Deimos, having wrenched control of Telos away from the sentient planet, appears in the sky (as also seen in Convergence #5).

    –Convergence #6-7
Deimos (from Modern Age Skartaris), having bested Telos and taken control of him and his inhabitants, pilots Telos through the Bleed and into New 52 Universe-0, an act which immediately registers an alarm with the New 52’s Justice League United. New 52 Martian Manhunter quickly alerts the New 52 Justice League. New 52 Superman assembles a task force which stands at attention as Telos comes into full view in deep space of New 52 Universe-0. On Telos, a grand battle between those allied with Deimos versus a conglomerate of heroes has begun. After scaring off the pre-Zero Hour Extremists, a bunch of displaced heroes from the Modern Age and from the New 52 Earth-2 unite under the leadership of Modern Age Earth-0 Superman (pre-Flashpoint Clark Kent) and New 52 Earth-2 Superman (Val-Zod). New 52 Earth-2 Flash (Jay Garrick) meets Barry Allen. With the encouragement of Modern Age Superman, New 52 Earth-2 Dick Grayson appeals to Telos’ humanity and brokers a peace with him. Telos assembles an army of heroes from various previously deleted chronologies (including timelines from Silver Age Earth-1, Silver Age Earth-4, pre-Flashpoint Earth-0, Silver Age 30th century, and more). This gaggle of warriors, including the pre-Crisis Silver Age Batman, attacks Deimos head-on. But Deimos already has an army of villains from various alternate chronologies (including timelines from Flashpoint, Kingdom Come, pre-Zero Hour Angor, Silver Age Earth-3, and more) at his disposal. A burst of energy erupts from Telos, scaring New 52 Earth-0’s heroes out of their wits. On Telos, the battle rages on as Telos himself battles Deimos. Yolanda Montez (of New 52 Earth-2) tells everyone that Deimos wants to steal everyone’s power by killing them all, including the villains too. This news causes the villains to join with the heroes to fight against Deimos. The pre-Zero Hour Parallax Hal Jordan swiftly executes Deimos. Unfortunately, this act releases all of the time-energy that Deimos has pilfered. A flash of electric red lightning spiderwebs through the multiverse as reality begins to crack and literally die.

–REFERENCE: In Convergence #8. Brainiac regains control of Telos, stops the destruction, and sends all the time displaced captives from each domed city back to the moment right before each was dug up and lifted out of its timeline. All memories and lived experiences of the year under the dome are erased. From the perspective of our Silver/Bronze Age Earth-1 Batman, it’s like Convergence never even happens.

–NOTE: Superman: Lois & Clark #1 tells us that several timeline-displaced heroes (including Silver Age Barry Allen and Silver Age Supergirl) travel from Convergence #8 to fight in the original Crisis, significantly altering events to such an extent that the entire archived/defunct Silver Age timeline is completely erased. These characters then go on to live in the New 52 for years until the publication of “Superman Reborn,” which not only rebooted the New 52 into the New Age/Rebirth Age, but served as a coda to Convergence, tying up its loose ends, fixing its narrative conundrums, and undoing any screwing-around-with the original Crisis, thus restoring the archived/defunct Silver Age timeline to its status-quo. In other words, all that has happened with Convergence gets basically erased. Barry Allen and Supergirl return (with their experiences and memories of both Convergence and life in the New 52 erased) to this point on the timeline, just in time for the Crisis—and, unfortunately for them, just in time to die.

6 Responses to Pre-Crisis Earth-1 Quick List

  1. Angus Livingstone says:

Hi there–love the site! Just wondering…Will the Silver Age year-by-year accounts be updated any further, or is this quick list the extent of Silver Age updates for the foreseeable future?

    Thanks again–this site is fantastic.

    • The Silver Age Quick List is a work in progress. Hopefully it won’t change TOO much, but I’m sure there will be changes to come. At the moment, my focus is on completing the Silver/Bronze Age timeline and fixing the confusing New Age timeline. Both of these processes might take a while. Feel free to email me with any specific questions in the meantime!

      And thanks for the love!

  2. Frank says:

Hello Collin! a few words to tell you that you are doing a fantastic job! it really helps the adventures logically the different adventures of batman through its differents incarnations.
I wanted to ask you a question about the confusing end of Convergence: what really happens to Supergirl and Flash when they return to crisis with the other characters that came to the rescue? do they die again to satisfy the story as in the first version of the story or do they survive thanks to the help of the other heroes who came with them?
Last question about the end of Convergence:
What did you mean by ” thus restoring the archived / defunct Silver Age timeline to their status quo”? Will the Silver Age and the other DC eras survive after Convergence?

    • Thanks, Frank!

Oh, Convergence—my personally most hated story arc in the history of superhero comics. To discuss it is to try to makes sense of utter nonsense. To answer your questions, in short, Flash and Supergirl absolutely died again to satisfy the original Crisis narrative. The status quo of the Silver Age timeline is that it is defunct and closed. So, no prior timelines have been revived. Basically, Convergence was erased from all timelines. This is all thanks to the “Superman Reborn” reboot, which ended the New 52 and officially began “Rebirth.” Because “Superman Reborn” functioned as an end note for Modern Age Superman (who was intrinsically linked to Convergence) in the New 52, it functioned as an end note for Convergence itself—which is great because Convergence was in DIRE NEED of resolution. I recently talked about Convergence on the blog portion of this site (Discontinuity), so pardon me if I crib from there for the rest of my response. And apologies in advance for ranting and raving a bit.

When writer Jeff King originally wrote Convergence, he said in an interview that it made “every character that ever existed, in [any] continuity or canon, available to us as storytellers due to an evolution of the multiverse.” The late great Mark Gruenwald must have been rolling in his grave when he heard that one. The entire concept of Convergence, as it was fleshed out over weeks, violated the physics of fictional reality in egregious ways. I’ll try to explain what I mean by this as best I can. In Convergence, King had several characters—including Silver Age Flash and Silver Age Supergirl—go back and “undo” the Crisis on Infinite Earths, yet the effect of this action caused no change whatsoever. Thankfully, and I think I’m one of the few people on the web to acknowledge this, the recent “Rebirth” reboot in the pages of Superman effectively undid Convergence.

Since the Golden, Silver, and Modern Ages exist only as archived/defunct timelines, any characters removed from those timelines had to be returned exactly as they were when they were stolen away (by Brainiac) in order to preserve the future sections of those timelines. This is the fundamental nature of the way comic book universes operate—the physics of comic book worlds, in a sense. The metaphor is as such: you cannot play with a toy in the sandbox if that toy has been removed from the sandbox because said toy literally does not exist anymore. So, basically a side-effect of the “Superman Reborn” reboot (possibly unintentional) is that the characters from the previous ages that continued to live on in the New 52 after Convergence ended—post-Zero Hour Hal Jordan, pre-Crisis Supergirl, pre-Crisis Barry Allen, Modern Age Lois, and Modern Age Superman—all get whisked back to the moment in time from whence they were removed from their timelines (in order to complete their actions and live out their lives as originally intended so as to secure the sanctity of their timelines). Returned, they have no memory of their time during Convergence or during the New 52. It will seem as though no time has passed at all. Thus, in this strange way, the “Superman Reborn” reboot acts as a coda to Convergence, both because it ties up loose ends (albeit imperfectly but as best it can) and because it erases it from all timelines.

To reiterate, Convergence not only created a bad PARADOX, it was in and of itself a BAD PARADOX too. (Paradoxes can be cool and fun, like Terminator, Back to the Future, or anything Grant Morrison writes—but Convergence does not fit the “cool and fun” bill at all.) There are a litany of problems with Convergence‘s paradox. First, if the original Crisis was undone, everything following it could not have happened. Second, Convergence‘s main narrative relies on having had the original Crisis occur as it originally did. Third, having certain characters (notably Modern Age Superman and Silver Age Flash) leave their old timelines permanently doesn’t make sense because they lived out full lives that lasted far longer than 1986 and 2011 (when they were plucked away by Brainiac, respectively). DC One Million is a prime example of Superman’s life and actions far into the future of the Modern Age timeline—just as Flash’s trips to the future are prime examples for the Silver Age.

It’s almost as if King thought that there was no set future on old timelines, as if Modern Age Superman’s story really ended with Flashpoint (or Silver Age Flash’s story really ended with the Crisis) and he could just pick up right there with these characters with no continuity errors as a direct consequence. To me, this shows that King doesn’t have a fundamental grasp on how superhero comics work. I’m not saying you can’t use an old character from a prior timeline, but if you do, you have to at least pick up with that character from where they left off. Unfortunately for nearly all DC characters from prior publication eras, their stories were told right up to the event of their deaths. The way I see Convergence, it’s a bit of disrespectful storytelling on the part of King. It treads all over the creative works of a lot of authors and attempts to retcon a ton of story just to fill the needs of another story that wasn’t worth a damn. Sort of like if George Lucas went back and did Special Editions, but of movies he had nothing to do with in the first place (and those new Special Editions permanently replaced the old films)! But I digress.

Hope my long-winded answer makes a little bit of sense!

      • Frank says:

Thanks to your explanations! everything makes sense especially the end of the Event.
New DC player, I have so far only fly over the Event in question, I was especially curious to see how they would conclude and when I arrived on the end of the last episode it surprised me to see the conclusion on a pirouette and 2 double pages without further explanations on the fate of the characters.

As I understood it the first time, I thought that the event ended a little in the kind of Back to the future 2 with his alternative Timeline stories.

An alternative Timeline or coexist all the pre-Crisis worlds before and after is an idea is very attractive but as you have so brilliantly reported It can not coexist alternative Timeline to the Pré-Crisis Universe with the others later universes since they were generated by the annihilation of it. Just as there could be no Convergence if Crisis no longer exists.

The best find of all this is the Superman of the Modern Age who brings with Superman Reborn a satisfying conclusion to Convergence and New 52.

Thank you very much for these answers and for these fascinating explanations Mr Colsher. it’s always a pleasure to read you

        A reader from France 🙂

        • Merci beaucoup, Frank! My associate and friend, Renaud, who lives in France as well, is currently translating the Real Batman Chronology Project (the Modern Age, at least) into French. It might not be done for quite a while, but I’ll be sure to let you know when it is!

Also, I’m way behind schedule on the Silver Age timeline, but hopefully I’ll be able to work on it more in the coming months.
